Creating a Socially and Emotionally Rich Classroom:
Tools of the Trade for Teachers to Use Immediately

The connection among social emotional learning, classroom management, and student academic achievement is well-documented. Foster a strong sense of classroom community, strengthen the quality of relationships, and encourage a high level of collaboration by using concrete strategies that won’t encroach on precious instructional time. "How Can I Help? Building a More Perfect Union"
Presented by: Dr. Gary Burgess

 
Post Mortem: Black/White.  While interacting with staff and students of American slave descent, it is important to understand how the history between black and white citizens affects today's learning environments.  This interactive seminar, designed for small, discussion-sized groups, will provide information allowing you to help with student achievement and productive learning environments.  Dr. Burgess wants you to bring background information to the table; each participant's experiences are valuable to the discussion. 
Highly recommended for administrative teams.

Pedagogical Principles for Effective Holocaust Education
Presented by: David Glass

 
The Holocaust must be understood as a shared human story and as a historical event. This course will offer a recommended pedagogy for teachers that allows their students to study a complex topic and apply the lessons learned to their own lives. (For Middle and High School)
 
3-hour session (no more than 10 participants per group)

Parenting During a Stressful Time

Children’s needs intensity under stress because their insecurities increase.  They need more from adults—more comfort, more reassurance, more personal attention.  This presentation will provide guidelines to hep parents support their child(ren) while also caring for themselves.

Navigating Special Education and Partnering with Your Home District
Presented by: Dr. Elizabeth Matheis and Dr. Harold Tarriff
 
This session will provide parents with information on the requirements for the provision of special education from both legal and professional perspectives; beginning with a brief overview of legal requirements, followed by prerequisite procedures and, most importantly, the most effective ways for parents to participate meaningfully in this process.  As a result of this session, parents will be better prepared to be co-equal partners with the professionals charged with meeting the unique special needs of their children.  Geared toward parents at the beginning of the intervention/classification process.

Teacher Leadership Program Development and Training
Presented by: Dr. Matthew Jennings

 
Teacher Leadership is an approach to improving student learning with tremendous potential.  When done effectively, it results in increased teacher retention and job satisfaction, expanded instructional leadership, and enhanced teacher collaboration.  To implement teacher leadership programs that achieve these results requires the following:

*A clear vision and mission for teacher leadership that is specific to the needs and goals of the school district
*A set of agreed upon beliefs about teacher leadership
*Clearly defined roles and responsibilities for teacher leaders
*A transparent, valid process for selecting teacher leaders
*A district/school culture that provides conditions supportive of teacher leadership
*Administrative understanding and support for teacher leadership, particularly at the building level
*Comprehensive teacher leader professional development
*A fair, valid teacher leader evaluation process

Year 1: Preparation for implementation of teacher leadership programs
Year 2: Summer prior to implementation of teacher leadership
