Learn how to target specific needs and reduce anxiety and stress with students and staff. Navigating Special Education and Partnering with Your Home District

This session will provide parents with information on the requirements for the provision of special education from both legal and professional perspectives; beginning with a brief overview of legal requirements, followed by prerequisite procedures and, most importantly, the most effective ways for parents to participate meaningfully in this process. As a result of this session, parents will be better prepared to be co-equal partners with the professionals charged with meeting the unique special needs of their children.

Mindfulness Program for Parents
Presented by: Kerri Bacall
This program contains information about scientifically proven mindfulness practices, including an introduction to mindfulness, the definition, benefits and science of the mind to establish credibility. Mindfulness can be described as the practice of paying attention in the present moment, and doing it intentionally and with non-judgement. The focus of the presentation, however, is on the mindfulness practice. Parents may not remember the words they were told, but they will remember who they felt during the practice; for that reason, we will be practicing mindfulness a few different times during the presentation. We will also have the opportunity for Q&A regarding how to best support their children during these challenging times. The program is secular and provides access to multiple resources for parents upon request.

Mental Health and School Success
Presented by: Dr. Stephanie Sasso
This session covers how mood, anxiety, and other mental health issues impact a child’s school experience, and how best to help children and teens with mental health challenges thrive and achieve their goals. Parenting youth with emotional and psychological challenges can feel like a struggle in competing priorities. How should a child’s academic goals and development be prioritized versus lessening stress and symptoms? When can a focus on schoolwork help and when does it hinder progress? How much should I push my child? These (and other topics) will be covered in this session.
